HDPE Geocell Ground Grid Paver For Road Subgrade Project in Egypt

HDPE Geocell Ground grid paver for road subgrade project in Egypt

Cellular Confinement Systems (CCS) - also known as geocells - are widely used in construction to control erosion, soil stabilization on flat ground and steep slopes, access protection, and structural reinforcement for load support and soil conservation. A typical honeycomb confinement system is a geosynthetic made of ultrasonically welded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) strips or novel polymer alloys (NPA)—and expanded in situ to form a honeycomb structure—and filled with sand, soil, Rock, gravel or concrete. Geocells are considered suitable geosynthetics for granular soils to support static and moving wheel loads in road, rail and similar applications.

How it works

When filled with compacted soil, the cellular restraint system creates a new composite solid with enhanced mechanical and geotechnical properties. When the soil within the CCS is stressed, such as in the case of load support applications, it creates lateral stresses on the perimeter cell walls. The 3D confinement area reduces the lateral movement of soil particles, while the vertical load on the contained infill results in high lateral stress and resistance at the cell-soil interface. These increase the shear strength of the confined soil, thereby:

Create a firm mattress or slab to distribute the load over a wider area

  • Reduced punching of soft soils

  • Increased shear resistance and load bearing capacity

  • Reduced deformation

Confinement from adjacent cells provides additional resistance to the loaded cells through passive resistance, while lateral expansion of the filler is limited by the high ring strength. Compaction is maintained by restraint, resulting in long-term reinforcement. On site, the geocell sections are fastened together and placed directly on the subsoil surface or on geotextile filters placed on the subgrade surface and supported open in an accordion-like manner by external stretcher assemblies. These sections extend over areas of tens of meters and consist of hundreds of individual cells, depending on section and cell size. They are then filled with various filler materials such as soil, sand, aggregates or recycled materials and then compacted using a vibratory compactor. Many of the surface layers are asphalt or unbonded gravel materials.

Additional details

CCS strip width, i.e. site height, is available in various sizes from 50 to 300 mm.

  • CCS welding spacing, i.e. geocell size, from 280mm to 660mm

  • CCS walls are typically made of textured or structured polymer sheets to increase displacement frictional resistance to the fill soil.

  • CCS is made of HDPE, NPA, low density polyethylene and non-woven thermally bonded geotextiles.

  • CCS walls are usually perforated to allow drainage from one unit to another.

  • On steep slopes, the CCS may have a steel cable or cable extending up through a central area and anchored into the concrete base or into the concrete base to resist downward sliding of the system.

  • CCS backfilling on long, wide slopes is quite labor intensive. Construction equipment known as pneumatic sand blasters or trebuchets have been used to advantage.

HDPE Geocell Product Features

  • It is easy to expand, can be folded for transportation, can be stretched into a mesh during construction, and filled with loose materials such as soil, gravel, and concrete to form a structure with strong lateral restraint and high rigidity.

  •  Light material, wear-resistant, good chemical stability, photo-oxidative aging, acid and alkali resistance, suitable for different soil and desert soil conditions.

  • High side limit, anti-skid, prevent deformation, effectively enhance the bearing capacity of the roadbed and disperse the load.

  • Geocell height, welding distance and other geometric dimensions can be easily changed to meet the needs of different projects.

  • But long-term settlement still exists. Some of these reasons are rainwater infiltration, material loss and foundation settlement. Another important reason is the lateral displacement of the material to both sides of the subgrade section under the action of long-term rolling and vibration forces under the wheel load.

    HDPE Geocell Engineering Application

  • Road load support, used to reinforce road and railway subgrades.

  • It is used for load bearing of embankment and shallow water channel management.

  • Steep slope and channel protection to prevent landslides and loads of mixed retaining walls.

  • In the case of soft foundation, the use of geotechnical plugs can greatly reduce the construction labor intensity, reduce the thickness of the roadbed, fast construction speed, good performance, and greatly reduce the project cost.
