Geotextile drainage fabric

A geotextile is typically defined as any permeable fabric material used to increase soil stability, provide erosion control or aid in drainage.Geotextiles are which, when used in association with soil, have the ability to separate, filter, reinforce, protect, or drain. Typically made from polypropylene or polyester, geotextile fabrics come in three basic forms: woven nonwoven and knitted. Nonwoven fabric is a fabric-like material made from staple fibre (short) and long fibres (continuous long), bonded together by chemical, mechanical, heat or solvent treatment. The term is used in the textile manufacturing industry to denote fabrics, such as felt, which are neither woven nor knitted. Some non-woven materials lack sufficient strength unless densified or reinforced by a backing. Varying polymers and manufacturing processes result in an array of geotextiles suitable for a variety of civil construction applications.In recent years, non-wovens have become an alternative to polyurethane foam.

Non-woven geotextiles fabric resemble felt and provide planar water flow. They are commonly known as filter fabrics, although woven monofilament geotextiles can also be referred to as filter fabrics. Typical applications for non-woven geotextiles include aggregate drains, asphalt pavement overlays and erosion control.
