Use of Geosynthetic materials in solid waste landfill design
Use of Geosynthetic materials in solid waste landfill design
Geosynthetics are most commonly used in solid waste landfills to protect surface water and groundwater, because they have multiple functions, excellent hydraulic performance, easy installation and cost saving . The geosynthetics used in the landfill site include non-woven geotextile, woven geotextile, geogrid, geomembrane, geocell, geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), geotextile, geosynthetics, etc. Each type of geosynthetics has specific functions. The geosynthetics system can be used in the landfill for separation, drainage, filtration, hydraulic barrier, gas barrier and protection [1]. Table 1 summarizes the types of geosynthetics and their functions, and Figure 1 illustrates their use in landfills. Geomembrane, GCL, geotextile pipe and geotextile are more commonly used geosynthetics in landfill applications, while geotextile, geotextile and geogrid are less used.

The role of geosynthetics in the design of solid waste landfill
| Function | Describe | Geosynthetics |
| Separate | Placed between two different materials to maintain or improve the integrity and function of the two materials | Non woven geotextile; Woven geotextile; Geocell; Geocomposites |
| Strengthen | Provide tensile strength for materials lacking sufficient tensile capacity | Woven geotextile; Geogrid; Geocell; Geocomposites |
| Filter | Allow water or gas to flow through it while retaining fine particles on its upstream side | Non woven geotextile; Woven geotextile; Geocomposites |
| Drainage | Transmit traffic in its structural plane | Non woven geotextile; Geographic pipeline; Geological composite materials; Geonet |
| Hydraulic/gas barrier | Relatively impermeable material to contain liquids or gases | Non woven geotextile; Geomembrane; Geosynthetic clay liner; Geological composite materials; Geonet |
| Protect | Cushion shall be provided above/below to prevent damage caused by puncture when placing the covering material. | Non woven geotextile; Geosynthetic clay liner; Geocomposites |
