Aging Is One Of The Inherent Characteristics Of Geomembrane

Geomembrane, composite geomembrane and other materials are high molecular polymers. This material is a link structure and is very flexible to oxidation (aging). It is prone to degradation reactions and exchange reactions, leading to material damage. Therefore, the service life of geomembrane, composite geomembrane and other materials has naturally attracted the attention of engineers.


Oxidation includes thermal oxidation caused by heat and temperature, and photooxidation caused by ultraviolet rays in sunlight. During this period, photooxidation has a strong destructive effect. Because ultraviolet rays have great energy, they can cut the molecular chains of polymers or cause photooxidation reactions. In addition, there are chemical and biological corrosion, dry and wet effects, freeze-thaw changes and mechanical wear. It also affects the durability of the data, but the impact of sunlight UV is the most important.


Polypropylene and polyamide are the worst UV-resistant materials, polyester is the best, polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride are in between, and the ratio of light and dark colors is very low. As the aging progresses from the surface to the inside, the product becomes thicker and thinner.


Aging is one of the inherent characteristics of polymer materials and cannot be completely eliminated. However, if a useful method is adopted, it may be greatly delayed. The method of delaying aging can be started from two aspects: on the one hand, the antioxidant is added to the raw materials, according to the influence of external factors such as light resistance, oxygen, heat and so on. On the material, such as mixing appropriate antioxidants, light stabilizers, dark carbon black, etc. On the other hand, the project adopts protective measures, such as shortening the exposure time of the material in the sun as much as possible, covering it with rock and soil (such as the required thickness exceeding 30cm) or deep water.
