Geomembrane in mining works
Geosynthetics enhance the economic and environmental performance of mining operations. They are one part of how mining companies achieve their goals. The heap leach projects are some of the largest users of geomembranes, by some estimates consuming 40% of all geomembrane produced, and continued uses are still being developed.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes feature exceptional chemical, stress crack, and UV resistance. They have the durability and chemical compatibility to withstand aggressive mining heap leach solutions in stacks and solution trenches. Available texturing can enhance the frictional characteristics necessary for lining system slope stability. And for onsite water management and processing fluid containment, geomembranes are an economical and efficient solution.
When valuable deposits in the ore are mined, the remaining ore is waste. Contaminated or harmful to the environment during the extraction process, the tailings must be isolated to prevent long-term damage to the environment. All or most of the tailing area must be sealed with impervious geomembrane or composite lining system. These sealing systems can protect the bottom and walls of the reservoir. After the mine is closed, the surface of the tailings is usually covered by geomembrane and geosynthetic clay patch.
In mining applications, such as heap leaching facilities, evaporation ponds or tailings ponds, very high loads are usually present, and geomembranes are more commonly used. The typical raw materials of geomembrane are: linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), high density polyethylene (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), and EPDM (EPDM). Then due to its high chemical resistance and physical properties, HDPE geomembrane is mainly used. Usually use greater than or equal to 0.75mm (30 mil).
